How a 600mm rammed earth wall paired with clerestory glazing eliminates heating and cooling costs in a dry climate studio.
Guide
A rammed earth wall is not just a material choice — it is a thermal strategy. The dense compacted soil absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly through the night, acting as a battery that smooths out temperature swings without mechanical assistance. In a dry climate with a large diurnal temperature range, that behaviour eliminates air conditioning and dramatically reduces heating loads.
The wall thickness that delivers useful thermal mass is 500–600mm. Below that, the wall still works structurally but loses most of its time-lag benefit — the heat moves through too quickly to buffer overnight temperatures effectively. Above 700mm, the cost of the additional material and formwork rarely pays back in energy savings.
Clerestory glazing on the north face (southern hemisphere) or south face (northern hemisphere) brings diffused light deep into the plan without the solar gain that south-facing glass generates in summer. A 400mm roof overhang calculated to the local sun angle shades the glass completely at midsummer noon but allows full winter sun penetration when the angle is low.
Passive solar design only works if the thermal mass is in direct contact with the sunlight path. A rammed earth wall behind glass on the sun-facing elevation — a Trombe wall configuration — collects heat directly and releases it to the interior overnight. A polished concrete floor on a sand-and-gravel sub-base adds a second thermal layer that costs almost nothing extra once the slab is already being poured.
Roof-mounted solar on a passive-designed studio is genuinely efficient because the base load is so low. An EcoFlow Pro system handling lighting, a computer, and a small appliance or two typically draws well under 3kWh per day from a correctly insulated passive building, making a modest roof array sufficient for year-round power independence.
